Chapter 23

I knelt over the unconscious woman, inspecting the back of her skull. The helmet had thankfully absorbed most of the blow, yet her head was split open pretty bad. Her breathing was weak and shallow, but fortunately she wasn’t bleeding much from the injury.

“Should we administer a potion?” Higgins asked as he leaned over us, wiping poor Gloria’s neck with a handkerchief.

“We should get out of here,” Trig countered. “That kind of explosion has probably caught the attention of every Titan in the world.”

“We can’t move her,” I said, as I pressed fingers against the top of her spine. “Her neck might be broken.”

“Avery, if it wasn’t broken when I dropped her down a 30 foot pit, it won’t be broken if we carry her out of here,” Trig said. He was bouncing up and down, glancing around nervously. That fearful energy was starting to carry over to me and I began to worry greatly about what could be coming next.

“We can’t risk a neck injury,” I replied. “One wrong move and she could be paralyzed for life.”

“So what? We’ll give her a potion, that’ll fix it,” Trig argued.

I didn’t have time to explain the limitations of potions to the boy and instead looked at Higgins. “What should we do?”

“The boy is right about the noise,” Higgins murmured, looking around. “And I’m not up to snuff with my abilities yet. I don’t think there’s a chance we could injure her any more than she has been. Worst case scenario, she’s out of commission until we find a way to heal her nerve damage.”

“Yeah, I’ve seen you regrow a hole in your stomach,” Trig said as he knelt down to help pick the woman up. “If you can do that, you can fix paralysis.”

They had a point about regeneration. Potions might not fix the issue, but there were other types of ways to heal a person.

“Fine,” I said, “let’s get her out of here. As quickly as possible. Trig, you need to hold her head tightly, and I mean tightly. Keep it in place no matter what. Higgins and I will carry her, as nice and evenly as we can. Damn it, we should have brought a stretcher.”

“I’ll add that to the list of gear we’ll need,” Higgins said as he helped me lift the unconscious woman. She moaned and swatted a hand up at us. That was a good sign.

Together, the three of us began to move the body back towards the Home Cave. It was difficult, for her gear was heavy and Higgins wasn’t as strong as me (thanks to my bone charm), making us move quite slowly.

As we left the clearing, I heard the skittering noises of little stones moving across the ground, as if the wind were blowing gravel. Yet, there was no wind.

“Hold up,” I said, stopping in my tracks.

“She’s way too heavy. We should have taken her armor off,” Higgins grunted as we stopped. I glanced behind us to see that the corpses of the gembeasts were beginning to shake.
